Dragonfly: An ER doctor, mourning for his lifeless spouse, acquires a succession of signals from her-containing messages from youthful subjects who’ve had near-death experiences. What do they mean? More drawn out than it needs to be, although a captivating and abnormal tale of one guy’s metaphysical odyssey. Cast includes Kevin Costner, Kathy Bates, Joe Morton, Ron Rifkin, Linda Seek, Susanna Thompson, Jacob Vargas, Jay Thomas, and Matt Craven. (103 minutes, 2002)

Air Force 1: Supercharged thriller in regards to aggressive Kazakhstani alarmists taking over Delta one and keeping the President, his family, and his entourage prisoner in midair. This film is an extreme, brutal, edge-of-your-seat popcorn fodder, anchored by Ford as a 2 fisted president who’s not scared to quarrel. Cast includes Harrison Ford, Gary Oldman, Glenn Close, Dean Stockwell, Wendy Crewson, Paul Guilfoyle, William H. Macy, Liesel Matthews, Xander Berkeley, Bill Smitrovich, Elya Baskin, and Jiirgen Prochnow. (124 minutes, 1997)

Macaroni: An uptight American businessman goes to Naples and finds some incomplete personal business left over from his last visit while he was an amorous cadet in the Second World War. 2 of the planet’s most charming entertainers try to keep this film together, and nearly triumph. Cast includes Jack Lemmon, Marcello Mastroianni, Daria Nicolodi, Isa Danieli, and Maria Luisa Saniella. (104 minutes, 1985)

Lillian Russell: This is a strained bio of the early 2Oth-century megastar. Lavish surroundings and weak plot line decrease Faye’s work. Arnold replicates his Diamond Jim Brady role with zest. Cast includes Alice Faye, Don Ameche, Henry Fonda, Edward Arnold, Warren William, Leo Carrillo, and Nigel Bruce. (127 minutes, 1940)

Black Orpheus: Street car conductor Mello and country girl Dawn fall in love in Rio de Janeiro during Carnival. Musical updating of the Orpheus and Eurydice fable is beautifully performed and prompted. Cast includes Breno Mello, Marpessa Dawn, Lea Garcia, Adhemar Da Silva, and Lourdes De Oliveira. (103 minutes, 1959)

Cry Freedom: An empathetic film in dealing with the life of South African activist Steve Biko (well played by Washington) and his kinship with crusading newspaper editor Donald Woods (Kline). Regrettably second half of film, minus the Biko personality, loses itself as it invests too much time on Kline and his families flee from South Africa. Cast includes Kevin Kline, Penelope Wilton, Denzel Washington, Kevin McNally, John Defrost, Timothy West, Juanita Waterman, John Hargreaves, Alec McCowen, Zakes Mokae, and Ian Richardson. (157 minutes, 1987)
