Scotland has some of the finest scenery in the United Kingdom making it the greatest vacation destination. With an immensely diverse countryside the choice of things to do is endless. Climbing mountains is highly popular, as are mountain biking vacations. The most popular vacations are golf or fishing. With Scotland being the home of the sport of golf it is not surprising that you are never too far from at least one excellent golf course. With the Rivers Tweed, Tay and Spey you are guaranteed of a superb days fishing. But what if you want an altogether different vacation?
Increasing numbers of families are making music festivals their annual vacation. Although most music festivals are incredibly large with a focus upon making cash, there are a small selection of family music festivals, for example Tartan Heart and the Wickerman Festival.
The Wickerman Festival is an annual music and arts festival takes place on a farm close to Dundrennan, Dumfries & Galloway about 5 miles from Kirkcudbright in Scotland. The event theme is the cult British movie “The Wicker Man which features appearances by Christopher Lee, Edward Woodward, Diane Cilento, Ingrid Pitt and Britt Ekland.
The very first festival took place in July, 2002 and was put together by a local man called Sid Ambrose. With little experience of organizing an event of such magnitude it is amazing that it still exists, especially when you consider the current economic climate. Wickerman has slightly changed each year and, like the movie, has a cult following.
The festival is incredibly family friendly it has numerous activities for children including, a fairground, a mountain biking trail, face painting and workshops. This can be easily proven by make a simple search for Wickerman Festival photos 2009 or alternatively visit the official Wickerman Festival Gallery.
Not too far from the festival site is Kirkudbright where you will discover many locations used in the film including Harbour Cottage (the bakery) and High Street Gallery (May Morrison’s post office and sweetshop). You will discover that there are a great many places worth visiting in the region and it is well worth taking a short break here so that you can visit all of the tourist attractions. Popular destinations in which to stay include Castle Douglas and Dumfries. Bed and breakfast in Scotland is nearly always excellent and is also priced very reasonably and far cheaper than staying in a hotel.
