Faraway So Close: The exact Wenders cast if not the exact Wenders film takes up where the more victorious Wings of Desire left off. This time it is life saver Sander who becomes mortal, joining his old celestial buddy who’s now wedded to a carnival entertainer. Lighter going than its predecessor, although additionally more lightweight; it’s still a good film to watch. All about My Mother: After a lady loses her child, she returns to Barcelona, renews a old relationship with a transvestite, and becomes involved with an actress her child adored. La Promesse: Harrowing story of a boy being brought up by a dad who ruthlessly capitalizes on, unlawful immigrants as their assumed savior, and master. Trouble starts while the boy, who unconditionally obeys his dad unquestioningly, creates a bond with one of the illegal immigrants. Moving in its understated, we watch a young boy struggle with tough ethical issues. Cast includes Jeremie Renier, Olivier Gourmet, Assita Ouedraogo, and Rasmane Ouedraogo. (93 minutes, 1996)
The Last Samurai: This is a true epic story of a lost soldier who winds up fighting a war in a far away land. Hired by the emperor of Japan to train his army, he is quickly captured by the Samurai he was training the army to defeat. Living amongst these great people he comes to believe in the way of the Samurai. He winds up fighting on their side, with all of his heart.
The Reward: Pledging premise and excellent cast led awry in static Western. A group of bounty hunters turn on each other, as greed for bigger share of prize money motivates them into conflict. Cast includes Max von Sydow, Yvette Mimieux, Efrem Zimbalist, Gilbert Roland, Emilio Fernandez, Henry Silva, and Rodolfo Acosta. (92 minutes, 1965)
Heartland Reggae: Shoddy documentary of ‘78 show remembering a visit to Jamaica by Haile Selassie. The music makes it worth watching. Cast includes Bob Marley and the Wailers, Peter Tosh, and Althea and Donna. (87 minutes, 1980)
Navy Seals: Navy Seals go into the Mid-East to rescue captured US pilots. During this successful rescue, the Seals observe that the enemy terrorist have Stinger missiles in their possession. With no time to destroy the missiles, they leave them behind and complete the rescue mission. We need to recover these weapons before terrorists have the chance to use them.
Jurassic Park: Billionaire Attenborough asks paleontologists Dem and Neill, and mathematician Goldblum to examine his island entertainment park, populated with living dinosaurs. He even has his grandchildren tag along, peacefully skeptical that anything might go awry. Slam-bang thriller is loaded with action, anticipation, hair-raising chills, and landmark visual effects: the dinosaurs appear real. It won three Oscars, for Graphic Outcomes, Noise, and Noise Outcomes Revising. Cast includes Sam Neill, Laura Dem, Jeff Goldblum, Richard Attenborough, Bob Poke, Ariana Richards, Samuel L.
